Small Dung Flies (117 NA spp) are commonly swept in fair numbers from nearly
all CCNHA old fields. Adults are small and dark with bristly heads and
distinctive wing venation. Perhaps 5 undifferentiated species of
Leptocera,
Rachispoda,
Pteremis,
and Halidayina (a pale species) have been swept from old fields. Other
species collected at manure piles and other decaying material include
Sphaerocera
curvipes,
Mesosphaerocera
annulicornis,
Copromyza
equina, and Borborella sp? These flies are reported to be common
in swampy areas where larvae live in excrement and refuse.
