Insects of Cedar Creek
Order DIPTERA
Family AGROMYZIDAE
(Leaf Miner Flies)
Leaf Miner Flies (188 NA spp) mine leaves or bore into stems or seeds.
They are quite host specific and examination of genitalia is required for
accurate identification. Perhaps ten species of these flies have been collected
in modest numbers in old field sweeps. Genera identified include:
Agromyza,
Cerodontha,
Liriomyza,
Phytoliriomyza,
Phytomyza, and Phytobia.
Many more are likely to occur here, but their collection and determination
will require the attention of a specialist. Sonya, where are you?
Plants containing leaf mines made by Agromyzids
include: Columbine (Aquilegia),
Ilex, Solidago, Thalictrum, Lychnis,
Urtica, Helianthus, Aster, and Rubus.
