Insects of Cedar Creek

Order DIPTERA

Family PIOPHILIDAE

(Skipper Flies)

(Table of Species)

Most Skipper Flies (31 NA spp) feed on carrion as larvae. Some (Piophila) that feed on ham and cheese products are considered economic pests. Larvae have the ability to jump by grasping their tail with their maggot hooks and then suddenly releasing hold?? I have collected Prochiliza sp on dead carp discarded along the road.
