Insects of Cedar Creek

Order DIPTERA

Family PLATYSTOMATIDAE

(Platystomatid Flies)

(Table of Species)

The flies in this small family (41 NA spp) are fairly abundant at Cedar Creek. Amphicnephes pullus is a brilliant green fly with black wings. It has been taken in a number of fields, primarily prairie. Another species? of Amphicnephes has been taken in savanna. Perhaps three species of Rivellia have been collected at Cedar Creek. These small flies with three dark wing bars are common in the savanna region south of Fish Lake. A brown and a black form are present. They spend much of their time walking about on foliage and waving their wings. A larger dark species has been taken from a few fields.
