The Big-headed Flies (105 NA spp) are routinely collected in small numbers
from a variety of CCNHA old fields. The large head found in this family
is almost entirely eyes. The larvae are internal parasites of leafhoppers
(Cicadellidae) and Planthoppers (Fulgoroidea). Perhaps five species in
the genera Pipunculus, Tomosvaryella,
and Verralia have been collected.
