Insects of Cedar Creek

Order DIPTERA

Family DOLICHOPODIDAE

(Long-legged Flies)

(Table of Species)

The Long-legged Flies (1227 NA spp) is a large taxonomically difficult group. Adults can generally be recognized by their long legs and metallic green coloration. Both adults and larvae are considered predaceous? Perhaps 30 species of this family have been collected. Several (8?)species of the large genus Dolichopus are common and widespread. Three genera (Sciapus spp., Condylostylus spp., and Mesorhaga sp.) of small metallic green species with excavated heads are also common and widespread. Several other genera of even smaller Dolichopods are also common primarily in savanna and woodland. Tentative ID's for these include: Chrysotus spp, Thinophilus sp., Medetera sp., Asyndetus sp, Hercostomus sp, Neurogona sp, Pelastoneurus sp, Campsicnemus sp, Sympycnus sp, Xanthochlorus helvinus, and Gymnopternus sp. Species of Hydrophorus have been collected at pond margins.
