Insects of Cedar Creek
Order DIPTERA
Family CHIRONOMIDAE
(True Midges)
The True Midges (817 NA spp) are primarily
aquatic. Larvae are familiar to many people as bloodworms, which are very
numerous in bottom organic ooze. Adults swarm and many come to light. Wisconsin
(Hilsenhoff, 1995) reports xx species in 103 genera. Roberta Lammers
(19xx) collected Chironomids in the bog surrounding Beckman Lake and reports
xx species, including several previously undescribed. Other than
this, little attention has been given to this group at Cedar Creek. Nearly
all of the material is undetermined. Most must be mounted on slides for
proper identification.
