Insects of Cedar Creek

Order MECOPTERA

Family BOREIDAE

(Snow Scorpionflies)

Winter Scorpion Flies (13 NA spp; 1 MN sp) feed on mosses in swampy areas. The wingless adults sometimes appear on top of the snow on mild winter days. Boreus sp has been collected in Minnesota, and it may well occur at Cedar Creek. So far, winter searches in white cedar swamp have been unsuccessful.
