The Cynipidae is a large group (636 NA spp) that are primarily gall
formers on oak (Quercus spp) and other plants. Members of the
Subfamily Synerginae are inquilines in the galls of others. Perhaps 20
species have been collected, but they are more readily recognized by the
characteristic gall they make than by their appearance. The oaks of CCNHA
savannas and woods host a variety of species. Some of the more conspicuous
are bullet galls (Disholcaspis
sp) on bur oak and oak apples (Amphibolips
spp) on pin oak. Genera producing leaf galls on oaks include Acraspis
(urchin galls), Callirhytis
(woolly galls), and Neuroterus
(spotty galls).
Diplolepis
sp forms stem galls on Rosa.
Diastrophus
forms galls on Rubus, and Gonaspis makes galls on
Potentilla.
