Insects of Cedar Creek

Order COLEOPTERA

Family PASSALIDAE

(Bess Beetles)

Only three NA species occur in this Family.  Odontotaenius disjunctus is a large beetle (30-40 mm) with striate elytra and a strong constriction between pronotum and elytra.  Larvae occur in rotten logs where they receive regurgitate from tending adults.  Not found in Minnesota or at Cedar Creek, but I have observed this species in Michigan.
