Antlions (79 NA spp) occur in sandy xeric fields and blowout areas of savannas.
The presence of larvae is given away by conical pits in the sand. An ant
or other small insect falling into this pit and trying to escape is bombarded
by sand particles flicked up by the hidden antlion larva. The unfortunate
prey is grasped by enormous sickle-shaped mandibles and removed below ground
where it is sucked dry. Adults resemble damselflies but have clubbed antennae.
Species collected at Cedar Creek include:
Cryptoleon
nebulosum, Hesperoleon abdominalis,
and
Myrmeleon immaculatus.
