Three subfamilies (129 NA spp, 5++ MN spp) are recognized. The Stenopelmatinae
(Jerusalem Crickets of the western U.S.), the Gryllacridinae (Leaf-rolling
Crickets of SE U.S.), and the widespread Raphidophorinae (Camel
Crickets, etc). Only the Rhaphidophorinae occur in Minnesota.
The solitary genus found at CCNHA is Ceuthophilus.
Some of these pale hump-backed species are blind and occur in caves in
SE Minnesota where they feed on bat dung? These species are best
collected with molassus baited traps, but they are occasionally taken in
pitfall traps. Ceuthophilus maculatus is a common woodland
species at Cedar Creek and Ceuthophilus divergens? has been
collected in old fields. More work needs to be done with this group.
Members of this family are scavengers.
