Insects of Cedar Creek

Order ODONATA

Family CALOPTERYGIDAE

(Broad-Winged Damsels)

(Table of Species)

Broad-winged Damselflies (8 NA spp) are large damselflies with metallic bodies that inhabit slow moving rivers.  Two species in the genus Calopteryx (Jewelwings) and Hetaerina americana (Rubyspot) occur in Minnesota.
The Ebony Jewelwing, Calopteryx aequabilis, is a conspicuous mid-summer inhabitant of Cedar Creek where it flies in company with Plathemis lydia and Libellula pulchella. Calopteryx maculata(with completely black wings) is an infrequent visitant to CCNHA.
