Carex sp.

Cyperaceae. Sedge. No ligule. Has a triangular base and stalk. Carex tends to have an outer green sheath that gives a stalky appearance to the plant. Carex has an inner sheath on the inside of the leaf blade which ends in a triangular point where the leaf falls away. Tends to be very tall- from 15-90 cm. The midvein may be "folded" into a furrow that runs the length of the leaf. Similar species: Cyperus. Cyperus is usually shorter and does not have a stalky appearance. Cyperus has a basal sheath which is papery, red and often has stripes and appears translucent. Cyperus has swollen bulbs just below the ground. See Cyperus filiculmis and C. schweinitzii.
