Panicum capillare

Poaceae. Grass. No ligule. Leaves and stems are very hairy. Leaves are long and broad and have a dense pubescence on upper and undersides. Inflorescence is a large, airy panicle with one spikelet ("noogie") on each branch. Similar species: Eragrostis spectabilis, Panicum praecocious and Panicum oligosanthes. Eragrostis has a more purplish panicle with more than one spikelet per branch. Eragrostis has a long, hairy ligule and no hairs on the leaves; hair on Eragrostis is not as dense or as spiky as on P. capillare. P. praecocious has a tighter, smaller and not as airy panicle. P. praecocious has shorter and broader leaves, and the stem does not have hairs that are as spiky. P oligosanthes has a stem that is only sparsely hairy and a tight, sparse inflorescence with larger "noogies" than any other Panicum found her. P. praecocious and P. oligosanthes are the most common Panicums's found at CCHNA. Found in fields A,B, and C.
