Poaceae. Grass. Long, hairy ligule. Hair is usually present on the oustside of the sheath, but this is variable. Leaves come off the stalk at an obtuse angle. Inflorescence is a large, airy, purple plume with flattened herring bone-type "noogies" on the ends of the branches. Similar species: Agrostis scabra- Agrostis has only one "noogie" at the end of the panicle branches and has a papery ligule. Sporobolus cryptandrus Sporobolus has a tuft of hair on the outside of the sheath at the base of the leaf and a ligule of short, whitish hairs. Found in all fields. |
