Eragrostis spectabilis

Poaceae. Grass. Long, hairy ligule. Hair is usually present on the oustside of the sheath, but this is variable. Leaves come off the stalk at an obtuse angle. Inflorescence is a large, airy, purple plume with flattened herring bone-type "noogies" on the ends of the branches. Similar species: Agrostis scabra- Agrostis has only one "noogie" at the end of the panicle branches and has a papery ligule. Sporobolus cryptandrus Sporobolus has a tuft of hair on the outside of the sheath at the base of the leaf and a ligule of short, whitish hairs. Found in all fields.
